Make Yourself Smarter

There’s nothing as embarrassing as forgetting a basic fact or being unable to do mental math in front of your mates. Not only does it make you feel foolish, but others may just start looking down on you. If browsing the web or watching TV has slowed your brain down a bit, or made your memory recall a bit fuzzy, then you may just want to reinvigorate your mind. We’ve come up with a list different things you can do to make yourself smarter.

1. Hang out with intelligent people

Did you realize that hanging out with intelligent people leads to stimulating conversation, which opens up your mind, helps you gain knowledge and insight, and makes you want to learn more? When you’re adding to your knowledge, you’re also become more confident. Even though it seems strange, just being confident is enough to calm your nerves and make it easier to focus and learn. So either way, hanging out with people with brains is the smart thing to do!

3. Keep a diary

We know, we know, keep a diary seems more like something for a twelve-year-old girl, but you’d be surprised to learn that some of the greatest minds in history kept a diary. Writing down what you did that day not only improves your memory recall, but it also helps you reflect on the decisions you made that day and helps you make better decisions the next. It can also keep you organized and focused, which obviously allows you to learn more easily.

5. Eat good food

Now, you don’t have to be a genius to understand this suggestion. When you eat crappy food, you feel crappy. When you eat nutritious and healthy food, you feel great! Make sure each meal is balanced and includes complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice or sweet potatoes, a lean protein, and as many green veggies as possible. It’s better if you can eat smaller meals, more often, but if you only have time to eat three meals a day, make sure there’s a little processed sugar and unhealthy fats as possible.

2. Read, read, read

Admit it, there really is no excuse anymore. Not only are e readers cheaper, lighter and more powerful than ever, but nearly every mobile phone can also let you read books. Reading stimulates brain activity, trains your brain to focus more easily, and adds to your knowledge. Remember, reading news online doesn’t necessarily count, as most news is written at a year eight level, so either get on a news site with a good reputation or download one of those classics and get reading!

4. Memorize

There are so many games out there nowadays that test and improve your working and short-term memory and also your mental processing abilities, and most are free and on your mobile phone! Whether it’s a game testing whether you remember an image or not, or a game that makes you connect dots or even Sudoku! Playing any of those games while waiting at the doctor’s office or sitting on the bus is better than just staring at the wall!

6. Get outside

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life is not only emotionally invigorating, but it quiets your brain, helps you focus, and sharpens your cognitive abilities. So leave your mobile at home and go for a walk in the park or mountains, really anywhere where you can walk in the quiet forest and take a break from the noise!
